Before You Begin
Before installing the CMi-4160 module, ensure the following are in place:
- Diehl Sharky 775 heat meter installed and ready for module fitting
- Access to a LoRaWAN network server (e.g. The Things Stack, ChirpStack, or your provider's portal)
- The CMi-4160 Device EUI (16-digit number printed on the module label)
- Application key and Join EUI (provided with the module or via Elvaco OTC app)
- A smartphone with NFC enabled and the Elvaco OTC app installed (available on Google Play) — required for configuration
- ESD protective measures observed — the CMi-4160 is an electrostatic-sensitive device
Installation
Step 1 — Mount the module
The CMi-4160 is mounted in module slot 2 of the Diehl Sharky 775 meter. Grab the device by its outer edges and gently mount it into position. Connect the meter interface ribbon cable to the meter interface connector (3).
Step 2 — Connect the battery pack
Connect the battery pack to the module's power connector (4) and gently place it in the meter alongside the module.
Step 3 — External antenna (CMi4160Ext only)
If using the external antenna version, connect the antenna using the MCX connector. Ensure the antenna is mounted at least 0.5 metres away from the meter to avoid interference.
Device Configuration
Before activating the module, apply the correct configuration profile using the Elvaco OTC app via NFC. The following parameters should be configured:
- Join EUI: Identifies the application server where meter data will be delivered. Default is 94193A0303000001 (internal antenna) or 94193A0304000001 (external antenna).
- Activation type: OTAA or ABP. Elvaco strongly recommends OTAA, where all network keys are generated each time the module joins the network.
- Application key: Generated by Elvaco and used in OTAA mode. Managed securely via the Elvaco OTC solution.
- Message format: Seven formats are supported — Standard, Compact, JSON, Scheduled-Daily Redundant, Scheduled-Extended, Combined Heat/Cooling, and Scheduled Extended+. Refer to the CMi-4160 user manual for payload details.
- Transmit interval: Sets how many messages per day the module transmits.
- EcoMode: When enabled, guarantees an 11-year battery life by limiting the transmit interval based on the device-specific EcoMode table.
- Configuration lock: Prevents unauthorised access to the module. When enabled, a device-specific Product Access Key is required to access the device.
Once all parameters are set, place the phone next to the meter and tap Apply settings. Hold the phone still until it vibrates three times — this confirms settings have been transferred successfully via NFC.
Activation
Upon delivery, the CMi-4160 is set to passive mode and will not transmit any messages until activated. There are two ways to activate the module:
Option 1 — Push button activation
Press and hold the push button on the module for at least five seconds until the green LED lights up. The module is now active.
Option 2 — Elvaco OTC app activation
- Open the Elvaco OTC app and ensure NFC is enabled on your phone.
- Remove the front enclosure of the meter if needed.
- Go to Apply mode, set the Power mode to Active, and tap Apply settings.
- Place the phone next to the module. Settings are applied via NFC.
LED status during activation
- Short flash on red LED — join attempt initiated
- Green and red LEDs lit for 1 second — joining in progress
- Short flashes on green LED — attempting to join the LoRaWAN network
- Green LED lit for 8 seconds — network join successful
If the module fails to join, it will retry automatically. The interval between attempts increases with each retry until it reaches once per day. A new join cycle can be started manually by rebooting the module: press and hold the push button for 5–15 seconds and release when the green LED is lit.
Server Configuration
Before the CMi-4160 can transmit messages, the device must be registered on your LoRaWAN network server. The following parameters are required for OTAA mode:
- Device EUI — 16-digit number printed on the module label
- Application key — provided with the module or via the Elvaco OTC app
- Join EUI — see Device Configuration section above
If using ABP mode, the following are required instead: network session key, application session key, and device address. Note that the application key is not required for ABP.
Initial data rate calibration
When first activated, the CMi-4160 transmits messages every minute for the first three minutes to allow the LoRaWAN network to calibrate to an optimal data rate. After this period, the module switches to its normal configured transmit interval.
